Top 10 Car Songs

Top 10 Car Songs

In no particular order, here is my list of Top 10 songs about Cars. This is on the back of me cleaning out my playlists. I found a list named “driving songs” and after I deleted it I decided to go through my library and list what songs I had in there that were about cars. This is what it looks like…

Willie Nelson - On the Road Again

car1

The reason why so many men want to be truck drivers? Nevertheless, these are exactly the men who rail against trucks blocking the traffic on the motorway.

Beach Boys - Fun, Fun, Fun

car2

Songs like “Little Honda”, “This Car of Mine,” “Custom Machine” and “Little Deuce Coupe” deal with what is really important for a top 10 cars article: cars. Fun is over in “Fun Fun Fun” when the father of a young lady takes away the key of a precious “T-Bird”, meaning a Ford Thunderbird. See? The Beach Boys don’t only sing about beach babes, surfing and good vibrations.

Tracy Chapman - Fast Car

car3

A Fast Car to ferry you away as quickly as possible… yes, chicks might dig fast cars but Tracy’s purpose was purely functional as a means of escape.

Natalie Cole - Pink Cadillac

car4

An unwritten law says that a car appearing in songs ought to be a Cadillac. That’s probably the reason why the majority of the songs dedicated to cars deal with this legendary American auto brand. Not only Natalie Cole, but Bruce Springsteen also sang about a pink Cadillac.

Meat Loaf - Objects in the Rearview Mirror

car5

If you are running out of ideas for lyrics, you could just go over the instructions of a new car and cite them. That’s what Meat Loaf might have done when he composed “Objects In The Rear view Mirror (May Appear Closer Than They Are)”. However, that’s not the only song Meat Loaf dedicated to the car. In “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” it becomes clear that a dashboard can seem to be heaven on earth when having a romantic date at a lake – at least when you are young and in love.

Prince - Little Red Corvette

car6

Prince puts on his gloves and embraces the steering wheel of the “Little Red Corvette”. He is a little scanitly clad, but the auxiliary heating seems to be working just fine.

Kraftwerk - Autobahn

car7

Kraftwerk, a German band, sang about the “Autobahn”, Germany’s famous motorway, and its unlimited speed limit. Lyrics such as “Wir fahr’n fahr’n fahr’n auf der Autobahn” (Engl. “We are riding, riding, riding on the Autobahn”) might sound a little bit daft, but the band didn’t become famous for its lyrics, but for its innovative sound.

Janis Joplin - Mercedes Benz

car8

Even though Janis Joplin is embracing a motorcycle on the cover, her biggest success was the song “Mercedes Benz”. Her life was as fast as a Porsche, but unfortunately not long.

Cindy Lauper - I Drove All Night

car9

Cindy, Roy Orbison and even Celine Dion are not afraid of dozing off dangerously at the wheel: all three of them have their own version of “Drove all Night”. Where are they heading? Needless to say: to their sweethearts. Sometimes even songs dedicated to cars need some love elements.

Queen - I’m in Love With My Car

car10

The object of Roger Taylor’s desire was an Alfa Romeo. When he presented the song’s demo to the other band members, Brian May wrongly thought that Taylor was just making a joke. Far off! When listening to the album “A Night At The Opera” it becomes clear, that he truly and deeply loved his car.
